Transforming an 11-Meter USMI Boat for Advanced Submarine Detection

Our client required an 11-meter USMI military boat to support their helicopter-based sonar system for anti-submarine warfare demonstrations worldwide. The vessel’s primary mission was to detect and track submarines in various sea conditions, making precision engineering and cutting-edge modifications essential.

To accommodate their Sonar Unit (SU), we installed a 20-inch sea chest, essentially creating a large hull opening for seamless SU deployment. This advanced system allowed the SU to launch over 500 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, supported by a motion compensation system to ensure stability in fluctuating sea states.

To facilitate rapid deployment and retrieval, we custom-built a hydraulic winch system powered by a Power Take-Off (PTO) from the engine crankshaft, enabling retraction speeds of 30 feet per second. Additionally, we installed a 5-kilowatt generator beneath the deck to support their 400 kHz sonar system, ensuring uninterrupted operation.

For real-time data transmission, we integrated an Omni-directional WiFi system, which was groundbreaking at the time given the technological limitations. Today, with innovations like Starlink and Vector Systems, connectivity and operational efficiency have significantly improved, making these military vessel modifications more effective than ever.
